Sand Rivers, The Selous, Tanzania, Africa
Stunningly situated on a wide curve of the Rufiji River, Sand Rivers’ expansive open style gives full play to the wide wilderness of the Selous from the comfort of one of the finest lodges on the continent.

Sand Rivers is a haven of natural luxury. A small, peaceful yet vibrant safari hub within the vast Selous wilderness with extremely high standards of hospitality and a huge variety of things to do. The lodge is situated under large Tamarind & Pod Mahogany trees, on a rocky peninsular overlooking a vast sweep of the Rufiji River and both cottages and lodge buildings are open-fronted, in order to take advantage of this beautiful wild setting.

The eight double cottages, built from stone and thatch, are cool and shaded and raised on wooden platforms. The front of each has a large open verandah with wonderful views across the river, its sand banks and the resident hippos and crocodiles. There is an imposing stylish mess where fabulous cuisine is served up on a regular basis and an extremely comfortable sitting room with the swimming pool set under a large baobab tree, on the banks of the river. So perfect is the spot and so various and comfortable are the places to contemplate it from that it is a wonder anyone gets out at all!

If one does manage it however, one will see that the setting is one of the most beautiful and scenically diverse parts of the Selous Game Reserve - deep river gorges, open-plains, swamps, sand banks & lakes - walks and games drives here are full of drama and discovery. The fishing is great, made all the more exciting by the legendary fighting Tiger Fish. Overnight fly camping is a speciality at Sand Rivers, offering an opportunity to experience a night ‘out’ - quite as hectic as anywhere else in the world! For safaris, every group has its own private vehicle and dedicated guide, on hand at all times although hippos, crocodiles, plains game and amazing birdlife are often seen on the sandbanks right in front of the lodge.

The sights and sounds of the river; the great variety of adventures, from the riverside to the deeper bush and the consumate luxury and warm hospitality of the lodge create the perfect safari experience.
