Banaticus Marsiliana, near Pitigliano, Maremma, Tuscany, Italy

A classical honey-coloured hunting lodge, Banaticus Marsiliana is a delightful and attractive family home with stunning views across the Maremma countryside and mature terraced gardens.

Marsiliana,Tuscany

Situated on the top of a hill, Banaticus Marsiliana looks like a castle from the distance but on driving through the gate one discovers an enchanting hamlet consisting of Banaticus Marsiliana, (originally known as the Castello), and other buildings such as the granary and watchtower. A fountain gurgles in the courtyard and everywhere geraniums, planted in all sizes of terracotta pots, the setting is one of Tuscany's picture postcards.

In the 18th Century, Banaticus Marsiliana was made into a residence and, as a family home, the furnishings have evolved gradually giving it a traditional and comfortable atmosphere. This homely feel is enhanced by the eclectic collection of paintings and pictures throughout and large fireplaces in most of the rooms on the ground floor add character and warmth to the property. The fabulous, fully equipped farmhouse kitchen is perfect for preparing al fresco meals, taken in the shade of the large wisteria covered pergola at the front of the house. From the ground floor, a door opens onto a staircase decorated in trompe d’oeil at the top of which is a landing leading to more bedrooms.

Outside, is a three tier garden with a profusion of citrus trees and palms and a pathway leading through the garden to the swimming pool. Views from the garden are magnificent as one gazes across silvery olive groves to the sea in the distance. There is so much to do in this most attractive area - be it walking along the beach, exploring the many cultural sites or visiting the Argentario Peninsula. Giglio and Giannutri are not far by boat or one may prefer a simple walk in the local woods, full of  mushrooms and chestnuts, rewarded by a glass of local wine on the terrace, looking out over the enchanting view.
