Rubra Gecko is an exceptional example of how the best modern building techniques and a contemporary interior design approach can fuse perfectly with traditional styles and blend happily with natural surroundings. Behind the traditional Greek façade one enters a cool, clean living area, combining features - underfloor heating - which mean that it can be used all year round as the perfect holiday retreat for one or two couples. The house is very private and affords a great deal of space for four guests, emphasised by the expansive view of islands and glittering water from the terrace, seemingly suspended over the Ionian. Furnished to a very high standard with carefully chosen, classic modern pieces and decorated with art, objects and textiles from around the world, the house provides a wonderful peaceful and relaxing place to stay.

There is an open fire in the living / dining area for those cooler evenings and a well-equipped kitchen just off this in easy reach of the terrace. Stairs lead to the gallery bedroom which spans the breadth of the house with seating and two sets of French windows bringing in plenty of light and below is a large, luxurious bathroom with walk-in shower and double-ended tub. The large deck suite has its own entrance and a vast decked terrace with views to the sea. Here the bed and bath rooms both open through French windows to the deck and there is an excellent Sottini bathroom suite with walk-in shower and a separate dressing area. There is even a small well-equipped kitchen so that the guests here can make themselves coffee or breakfast or, indeed, be as independent as they wish.

Most of the day, of course, takes place outside and at the house in it's utter bliss!

There are extensive tiled and decked terraces with a fabulous vine covered pergola  under which swings a Mexican hammock - great for lazy days relaxing with a glass of something cool. There is a superb barbecue and outdoor cooking area for fun summer evenings after a day’s exploration of the island and the property even boasts two swimming pools - one is a stunning infinity pool running along the length of the front terrace with a submerged seat at one end where one can relax with a book and/or chilled glass of wine and below it is a shallow ‘reading’ pool, outside the deck suite. The setting is even further improved by the lovely display of flowers and plants throughout the year including fig, eucalyptus, cherry, bougainvillea, iris and crocus.

There is plenty to do on the Island of Lefkada be it exploring the inland mountains, visiting the many beaches or renting a boat and hopping over to some of the nearby islands. There are walks from the villa, through the wooded hillside country or a short car ride takes one to the coast and Porto Katsiki, Agios Nikitas or other day trip destinations. Guests are spoilt for choice provided one can draw oneself away from The house with its mesmerizing sunsets and captivating views.

For the perfect retreat with select company, Rubra Gecko is well worth a visit but will be very difficult to leave!
