Edulis House, Barbados, Caribbean
This beautiful plantation house, built in the eighteenth century, set in eleven acres of landscaped grounds and five minutes walk from the beach is renowned for its comfort, privacy, impeccable service and, probably the finest cuisine in the Caribbean.

The Edulis House - built of white, coral stone, in the seventeenth century - this sumptuous plantation house was re-designed in the seventies by the famous theatre designer, Oliver Messel and is now the epitome of Caribbean glamour. His houses on Barbados and Mustique are sheer fantasy - he didn’t believe in internal stiarcases - much to the disgust of the butler. Edulis House sits high on an escarpment, overlooking the sea at St Lucy, surrounded by ten acres of elegant gardens under mahogany, palm and ylang-ylang trees.

Edulis House's airy rooms are strewn with plump chaise longues, white linen and flowing muslin curtains. There are a number of places to dine - al fresco on the terrace by the wood burning pizza oven, under the trees, threaded with fairy lights or by the lake with its bubbling fountain - the dining room is candlelit and its refectory table stands in front of the three hundred year old fireplace. There is a wonderful sense of space at Edulis and many areas, terraces and drawing rooms for guests to relax.
The incredible pool was blasted out of the solid coral with dynamite - the story goes that the surprise was sufficent to cause Lord Rothschild, a former neighbour, to spill his vodka and tonic in shock! - a beautiful lagoon, surrounded by dense vegetation. Although the house benefits from its raised position - fabulous views and cooling breezes - the beach is just a short walk (5mins) along the private garden path. Six Men’s Bay is a ten minute walk away and fresh fish can be purchased from the fishermen at Half Moon Fort, a little way down the coast. Five minutes' by car will take you to Port St Charles where guests of Edulis House have complimentary membership and the house speedboat - a Zippa - is at your disposal.

Dwight mixes a mean rum punch and Kenroy Hunte's team of chefs produce daily, probably the best food in the Caribbean. From the fantastic breakfasts, throughout the day, the standard of catering is unquestionable. The windswept Eastern coast - a beautifully rugged contrast to the sophosticated west coast of hotels and private houses - is only a short distance away and a wonderful spot for one of Dwight’s epic picnics.
In the evenings, the locals provide brilliant entertainment - music and dancing are available in the most surprising spots - or better known venues like the Lone Star and the Croc are ever ready - should one wish to leave the magical Edulis enclave.

Future developments to the estate include a further private suite, home cinema room, board room and yoga facilities. Please call us for more details.
