Kifaru, Lewa Downs, Laikipia, Kenya, Africa

Simply the most wonderful African home in the Kenyan bush - under Mount Kenya itself. If you can possibly take the opportunity, you must visit Kifaru; it is an incredible property worthy of a beautiful setting.

Kifaru,Laikipia

When the opportunity arose to create this wonderful home in the beautiful Lewa Downs Conservancy, the owners of Kifaru were more than happy to agree to build it in an eco-friendly fashion, power it by sun and wind and would even hand it back to the reserve on their demise. Dreams and pragmatism collide here in order to save species from extinction; the water-hole has been dug in front of the house to attract elephant, zebra and others and there is a rhino sanctuary on the Lewa Ranch so that the vista from the house is of the Kenyan bush of old.

There are no fences here and animals wander freely in some of the best game viewing country in Kenya. Cheetah, lion and elephant and regaularly spotted - either on the plains or in the Acacia forests. Guests are looked after as in the golden era of safari with private drivers and guides, all meals and drinks and almost any activity one could wish for - the house is yours for your own houseparty and the daily pace is dictated by you.

More than two hundred craftsmen were employed to create Kifaru which resonates perfectly with the colours and contours of the Kenyan landscape. The Great Room housing the drawing and dining rooms is massive in medieval proportions with giant cedar beams and thatch with baronial fireplaces at either end. Weathered wood of wrecked dhows is used to superb effect and the whole room opens up (french windows) to look out to where the lion roam the plains. The colours inside the house are those of sand and impala - soft tans, yellows and black - and the library room is a very soothing place to sit, relax or play games.

From the poolside cabana, the infinity pool reflects Mount Kenya’s snowcapped peak and days are filled with game drives, rides and walks or lolling by the pool, reading - and guests will enjoy the fantastic cuisine (the owner supplies La Grenouille in New York) and sundowners overlooking the vast African plain to the Samburu Hills in the north.
