Opposite the better known town of Crans Montana, in the French speaking Valais region, lies the Val d’Anniviers where ‘the sun nearly always shines’. Of the six villages, five of which have ski areas, St Luc is the home of the Grand Hotel Bella-Tola, built in 1859 and consists mainly of very rural and authentic looking wooden buildings with a population of 200, yet this rises to 4,000 during the ski season, belying a well-gaurded secret.

Apart from the pisted runs, of which there are enough to satisfy any intermediate skier, there is an abundance of fantastic off-piste, regularly chosen as the practice grounds of the professionals. The powder on these largely north-facing slopes remains un-tracked and inviting, the lift systems are new, there are never queues and everyone greets you with a smile. Moving between the villages, each has its own character and all are charming - one can discover (there is no ‘beaten’ track here) the friendly little restaurants for lunch - perfect places to re-charge and plan the next mountain assault.
Since the pioneering days of the first British mountaineers, facilities have moved on somewhat and, although that spirit still lingers here, to some degree, the Grand Hotel Bella-Tola offers a great deal more than the mountain huts of yesteryear. Beautiful, with its soft-yellow façade dressed with pretty shutters, it is fronted by a pretty garden and lawn and looks out to the magnificent surrounding peaks and plunging valley.

In summer, breakfast is served in the conservatory and for dinner you can choose between the French restaurant, or Swiss fare in the ‘Tzambron’ - a cozy traditional ‘stubli’. The Piano Bar, Salon Cheminee and Salon de The are furnished with antiques throughout and decoration in period style and the 1900 Salon has a superb original fresco ceiling.

The Buchs-Favre family are the essence of friendliness and hospitality and just what one would expect from hosts in this delightful valley.
