La Bastide de Marie, Menerbes, Luberon, South of France, France

Sublime Provencal decor awaits amidst the vineyards of the Luberon. The Bastide de Marie, where gastronomy and oenology meet in perfect harmony is a setting of great beauty and pampering luxury.

La bastide de marie, luberon

In the very heart of the Luberon, close to Bonnieux and Gordes and just below the hilltop town of Menerbes, The Bastide de Marie sits amid vineyards of Grenache and Syrah grapes, interspersed with lavender and punctuated by cypress. The countryside is the Provence that inspired so many; nothing out of place and ivy-covered farms and hilltop towns that blend so picturesquely with nature.

The Bastide is widely recognised as being one of the best examples of eighteenth century Provencal vignobles left and as one approaches - through olives and lemon trees, lavender and herbs - one may easily see why. The warm honey coloured stone and pastel blue shutters create a wonderfully soft and sumptuous impression of hospitality which is enacted as soon as one arrives.

Immaculately turned out staff guide one through a peaceful enclave, past pools and into an incredibly comfy looking drawing room from which lead the rooms. Each is styled differently but all make great use of exposed stonework and textures of linen, wood and rock which are constantly changing as the sunlight strays across them. Wonderful, warm butter-coloured flagstones are used throughout, including the bathrooms where twin basins and pedestal baths await, amply supplied with homemade olive oil-based soaps and luxurious bath towels and robes.

The terrace is the vine bedecked setting for breakfast, lunch and evening aperitifs, cobbled and furnished with comfortable wrought iron. Breakfast is a buffet laid in the farmhouse styled kitchen whilst lunch and dinner are gourmet delights prepared by the celebrated chef and combine local produce and recipes with his undoubtable skill. Accompanied by the Bastide’s own wines and impeccable service the cuisine is truly excellent.

There are two outdoor pools for guests’ enjoyment, one heated which flows free-form around the buildings and the other unheated which cascades pool to pool in the gardens. The spa is a real oasis of calm, located in a rocky grotto and offering every treatment one could wish, enhanced with local herb-lore and oils.

In every direction are the delights of Provence - Avignon and Gordes, Menerbes and Bonnieux - or one may choose simply to stroll through the vineyards before the chef is ready to delight one’s senses once more...
