Once the home of a cardinal, this beautiful building nestles under the great wall of the Papal Palace in the centre of Avignon, a fascinating city in the centre of Provence.
The Papal Palace towers over the centre of Avignon in immense medieval splendour and immediately next door, sheltered from the Mistral by this wondrous wind-break is the Mirande. Once home to a cardinal, the Mirande was just twenty short steps away from the papal court and remains best placed today to take advantage of all that this fascinating city has to offer.
The central atrium of the hotel rises all the way to the roof where glass allows daylight to flood this fabulous courtyard space and every one of the landings is washed by natural light. Breakfasts and lunches may be served in this atrium or alternatively outside in the private, walled garden where one may enjoy the glorious climate of this capital of Provence. The Michelin-starred restaurant is sumptuously decorated in traditional style and there are private dining rooms available for discreet parties.
Downstairs is the chef’s demonstration kitchen, Le Marmiton where guests are invited to take a lesson or watch the chef practising his art in this magical setting; and afterwards dine together with him and a glass or two of the sommelier’s choice.
The rooms are all different. They have individual characters and decoration, curtains, linen, wall coverings and even down to the floor - wood, stone, carpet or tile - but all of them are spacious and extremely comfortable. Exquisite taste pervades and lovely furniture and interesting fittings are constantly improved and innovated by the Stein family who bring their passion for hospitality to their patronage of La Mirande.
