Just twelve, huge open-plan villas on a pristine Indian Ocean beach provide exceptional comfort and pampering hospitality in a conservation area where man has not visited for hundreds of years.

Maluane is the largest eco-tourism project in Northern Mozambique and incorporates three islands and a vast expanse of wilderness on the mainland and coast. This is one of the last untouched areas on the Indian Ocean and the natural beauty found here is stunning. Eight kilometres of powder sands, indigenous tropical forest, virginal reefs and secret coves await discovery; the turquoise waters so clear that they serve only to magnify the fascinating marine life below.

The first part of the project, opened in December 2005, is the luxury eco-lodge on Vamizi Island. Ten huge open-plan beach villas with decked areas, bathrooms, open air showers and sitting rooms give onto pristine beach and the beautiful waters of the Indian Ocean beyond. The influence of the different trading empires on coastal Mozambique, over the centuries is reflected in the lodge interiors where beautiful hand-carved furniture and natural fabrics add colour and texture to the already colourful scene.

The main lodge building is a similarly open-sided, open-plan design on split-levels, sprawling along the treeline and taking advantage of the magnificent vistas. A sunset bar is positioned close to the water’s edge and offers plenty of potential for ‘lolling’ and relaxing in general! Guests may choose either to dine in the restaurant overlooking the ocean, on the beach, on their own verandah or in a secluded cove. The excellent wine list will compliment the chef’s Mediterranean and Indian Ocean cuisine wherever guests wish to enjoy it!

Vamizi hospitality includes all activities from diving and snorkelling to deep sea fishing, walking and birding and sea kayaking. Turtles use the islands to hatch and there are various other ecology-related activities which are enormously interesting. Dhow trips are the way to reach secluded coves, crying out to be picnicked upon and relax in the bosom of nature with select friends - Maluane is one of the best places on the planet in which to do so.
