Chateau de Bagnols, nr Lyon, Beaujolais, France
One of France’s national treasures and restored to its former magnificence, The Chateau de Bagnols offers elegant and luxurious living to its favoured guests - a magnificent base from which to explore this fabulous area.

Lady Hamlyn discovered the Château de Bagnols in 1987 and with much energy and vision she painstakingly restored the château to its former glory and created what is now one of France’s finest château-hotels. Set among vineyards, forests and green hills in the heart of the Beaujolais countryside, the Chateau’s towers, moat, honey-coloured stone (known as pierres dorées) and drawbridge are a truly magnificent sight.
The twenty-one rooms and suites have been painstakingly restored, revealing beautiful old wall paintings created during the residence’s finest period when nearby Lyon was one of Europe’s greatest Renaissance cities. Bagnols offers both the experience of being a cherished guest in historic, luxurious and relaxing surroundings as well as an ideal venue to explore this fascinating countryside.

The bedrooms, which include eight apartments (six in the château and two in the Residence), bear the names of those who have contributed to its distinguished past. All have private bathrooms and have been furnished with exceptional care in soft velvets and shimmering silks and with rare and beautiful antiques; they also possess the very latest telecommunications system. The influence of Italian Renaissance decoration can be seen in the work of the 17th-century painters, who included the most fashionable ideas in their decorative schemes: landscape panels, fanciful friezes and bold ceiling arabesques.

Nothing has been left to chance and nothing is too much trouble. The Chef’s fabulous cuisine offers the range of regional specialities, traditional spit-roasted meats and game together with inspired new dishes. The Sommelier offers all the different Beaujolais and any of the great wines of neighbouring Burgundy from his splendid and varied wine list.
On fine days you can elect to eat out of doors on the south-facing terrace under the redolent shade of the 100-year-old lime trees. Here you can look down to the gently splashing fountain, which stands at the centre of the park surrounded by an orchard of cherry trees with wild flowers. Beyond here lies a dazzling panorama, which melts into the hazy distance of hills covered in vineyards and woods.
