The beauty and variety of the scenery on the Pollencan Peninsular has long been appreciated and the Hotel Formentor, which has stood within its own vast estate since 1646, has preserved all four thousand two hundred acres of this natural beauty, unspoilt. The name Formentor comes from the fields of wheat (Frumentum) which originally occupied this land, where lovely pine groves now stand and in over seventy-five years the hotel has played host to almost every dignitary one could imagine from the Dalai Lama and Winston Churchill to Charles Chaplin and Laurence Olivier.

With this pedigree, the Formentor is of course well-practised in hospitality. The concierge will arrange everything you could wish for without fuss, from show tickets to cars and boats and provide any other information you might need. There is a beach with a bar and restaurant, tennis courts with floodlighting, a putting green and swimming pools, including a separate one for children.

The Formentor is extremely well geared towards families with its kids’ clubs and separate facilities, allowing parents to relax in the classical splendour of this grand hotel and enjoy the magnificent scenery. There is a cinema and riding school - horseback is a marvellous means of touring the estate - and a sauna to ease oneself into the evening and the fabulous mediterranean cuisine, waiting in the restaurants. One may dine on the waterfront or outside by the pool or, alternatively in ‘El Colomer’, the dining room with its long terrace, looking out to the peninsular and sea beyond.

A walk through the mature gardens underlines the fact that the Formentor has been built with great respect for its surroundings and time has created a wonderful harmony between the two.
