Cottar’s 1920’s Safari Camp, Cottar Private Reserve, Masai Mara, Kenya, Africa

Some things do not change, so it is hardly surprising that the Cottar family, who have been running luxury safaris in the Mara since 1920, remain the most skilled in their homeland’s bushcraft and the style of elegant service.

White canvas, mahogany, brass and crystal abound in this ‘Out of Africa’ film set, whilst the gramophone plays and an old typewriter is on hand for you to record your day’s experiences. Your personal butler is also on hand and will arrange massage, fishing, guiding, walking, swimming and picnics - whatever your whim - whilst supervising the silver service and the delivery of your drink of the moment, in any place at any time, irrespecetive of the relative positions of sun and yardarm.

A personal guide and game vehicle are at your disposal and convenience, as in days gone by, to make whatever safari you choose in this fantastic 22,000 acre private reserve in the Mara - walking, driving, leopard baiting, fishing, porter tracking, fly camping - step back in time and savour the good old qualities and values of a real safari, hosted by Calvin and Louise Cottar.

The camp lies in a forested valley beside a spring with beautiful extensive views across three reserves  - the Cottars were here first (in 1919) and not surprisingly took the best spot - and provides that rare commodity these days, crowd-free exclusivity. Each tent is luxuriously furnished with safari antiques from the ‘20’s and situated to ensure privacy, each has en suite bath and dressing rooms and canopied verandahs - the mess tent has bar and library areas and rugs are laid on the floor. The Maasai askaris guard against the more inquisitive wildlife which are here in such abundance - fantastic opportunities for viewing that elusive cat, the leopard - that guests cannot fail to be enchanted with this, most authentic African safari experience.
