Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge was Tatler's choice for a private party this year. The suptuous tented camp on Vancouver Island in British Columbia manages to mix great humour with a pristine wilderness setting to great effect.
The biodiversity reserve is entirely supported by revenue from tourism and so one can feel entirely at peace when sipping a G&T by the roaring fire in the outdoor sitting room.

Hilltop Haven
Set high above the sparkling luminous blue of the Ionian Sea, the villa that Angela and Kyricaos Tappas have built on the Greek island of Lefkada has a beautiful view. While the sun shines, the misty mountains frame the sea, sailing boats meander between islands, and ferries cut white furrows in an otherwise glass-like surface...

Chole Mjini Mafia Island, Zanzibar
This atmospheric hideaway in Mafia Island marine park is a place of dappled sunlight and birdsong and was once a prosperous Omani settlement on the ancient trade route between Arabia and Africa.
High Life: The seven treehouses are up to 20 feet off the ground and are reached by fixed wooden stepladders.
Touch Wood: The jungle is a mixture of lush palm, orchard and mangrove and the treehouses are set among ancient baobabs.
Jungle Luxe: This is an authentic eco-lodge. There is no electricity - so no air-conditioning, fax or email - but you do get hot showers, flushing loos and interiors that are gloriously finished with sunken Persian baths, Egyptian cotton sheets and handmade soaps.
Bird's-Eye View: Look out over the grove of baobabs towards the blue expanse of Chole Bay and its scattered islands.
Best Time to Go: Any month but February.

Global Artichoke has sniffed out some really interesting villas such as Villa Bianca, a curvaceous house in the up and coming area of Puglia. Overlooking the azure waters where the Ionian and Adriatic seas meet, it's perfect whether you want to enjoy the region's fabulous cuisine, explore the dramatic arid countryside or indulge in a little water-skiing. If you want intimate and romantic, the stunning two-bedded St Andrea del Carpine is a beautifully converted Romanesque church with shaded gardens, dramatic views and a great art collection.
