Casa marrucina, abruzzo

Recently restored and refurbished by a well-known London Interior Designer, Angustifolius Marucina is a quite unexpected find in such a seemingly remote region. Abruzzo is steeped in history, has one of the best gastronomies in Italy and boasts truly magnificent scenery. It is fascinating, beautiful and alluring and the property is perfectly situated for exploring and discovering this wonderful and unexploited part of Central Italy.

Situated on the plateau of ‘Piano La Roma’,(in the middle of the archaeological site of ‘Cluviae’) Angustifolius Marrucina looks out over panoramic views on three sides, with its own 1000-tree olive groves stretching out at the rear. Although the main house was constructed after the war (the barns are over one hundred years old) the owners have converted it into a most comfortable and spacious home – taking advantage of the high ceilings and what were previously agricultural outbuildings to produce a truly luxurious environment whatever the time of year.

The vast kitchen/dining room is extremely well equipped and is the perfect place in which to enjoy experimenting with the really delicious fresh local produce. Bright and airy with red laquered cabinets, black granite worktops, a  professional range, large central island, dining table for 12 or more, and even an office at one end, this superb room has been thoughtfully designed and furnished – the end result being a great space in which to have lots of fun. Next door is the equally spacious living room with antique stone fireplace and an effective mixture of contemporary and antique furniture. For those guests looking for some ‘quiet time’ then there is the book-lined study to retreat to with a book or watch a film.

Upstairs, the bedrooms enjoy excellent en suite facilities and delightful views. Each of the rooms is spacious with luxuriously interlined curtains and best quality beds and furnishings. The master bedroom suite comprises a lobby with fitted wardrobes, a sophisticated bathroom with double basins in marble surrounds, double shower with Bizazaa mosaic tiles, and bedroom with antique mirror, linen press, and hand-sprung bed. Two further bedrooms have French windows onto terraces (one terrace with access to the ground floor swimming pool area). One of the other guest bedrooms has a charming antique Victorian half-tester double bed with bed hangings which with the twin bedroom next door, lobby and bathroom it makes an ideal family ‘suite’.

Outside, the landscaped garden and pool are set adjacent to the house with views south over the village of Palombaro, the lake and 12th century tower of Casoli and on to the mountains of Roccaraso. To the north the olive groves stretch as far as the eye can see. Outside dining here is superb with a vine and wisteria covered pergola to provide shade, a barbecue for some al fresco cooking and a ping pong table for some additional fun.  The garden has been planted with palms and oleanders, as well as a wealth of fruit trees, rosemary, lavender, cypresses and pines.

There is lots to explore in Abruzzo be it walking in the mountains of the stunning and magnificent National Parks, relaxing on the beaches just forty minutes away on the Adriatic, skiing in the southernmost resorts of the Appenines, or discovering the really untouched medieval villages where one can find some of the very best cuisine in Italy! This is the land of world famous pasta (De Cecco is produced just over the hills from Angustifolius Marrucina) and of many superb wines including the renowned Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
