Quilalea, Quirimbas Archipelago, Mozambique, Africa

Nestling in a forgotten corner of the tropical Quirimbas Archipelago, just ten degrees off the equator nine private villas offer superb sea views and the relaxed, friendly style of the local people will endear you to this lovely lodge.

Quilalea, mozambique

Quilalea is an idyllic island resort nestling in a forgotten corner of Mozambique’s Quirimbas Archipelago in the tropical Indian Ocean. Quilalea opened in November 2002 and surrounded by the sparkling azure waters of this new marine sanctuary, it is perfect for those in need of relaxation mixed in with a little adventure and discovery - completely uninhabited, it offers exclusivity and unparalleled natural beauty.

Quilalea's nine rustic cottages have magnificent sea views and accommodate eighteen guests in a scene of great natural beauty. Each villa is constructed entirely from indigenous materials and timber, opening onto a private veranda with panoramic views. Eclectically furnished and mostly hand-made, the villas are very comfortable and large windows allow the lovely sea breeze to drift pleasantly through. Natural rock walls of reclaimed coral, makuti thatch and air-conditioning (as well as colonial ceiling fans) keep you cool by day. The island-style furniture is crafted from Quilalea teak and mahogany by local carpenters in a Creole Muani style.

Water sports are extremely good at Quilalea - just where the Indian Ocean current, rich in sea life, hits the African continent - and the rugged white-coral beaches and mangoves forests are a safe haven for Samango Monkeys, birds, nesting turtles, dugong and over three-hundred-and-seventy-five species of tropical fish.

Whilst this pristine wilderness will enchant you the chef, with influences from Goa and Mozambique will delight you with his magnificent cooking. Set on a peninsula at the northern end of the island, the restaurant is perfectly placed for watching the sun set, glass in hand, although one can enjoy his superb cuisine on the beach, or on one’s own verandah... Luckily, there are two PADI dive masters and snorkelling, fly-fishing, surf-casting, sport fishing, boat trips and canoeing are all to be highly recommended as ways to justify such delicious indulgence. In everything, Quilalea’s professional and welcoming staff will ensure your comfort, well being and relaxation are absolute in what has to be one of the friendliest beach lodges in the world.

Just twelve, huge open-plan villas on a pristine Indian Ocean beach provide exceptional comfort and pampering hospitality in a conservation area where man has not visited for hundreds of years.

On a tiny island off Mafia, lies a Robinson Crusoe camp that is truly remarkable - a handful of treehouses, with four-poster beds, supported by ancient Baobabs amid the Shirazi and Omani ruins and tropical vegetation of old, forgotten Swahili.

An exclusive island paradise, full of character and charm. Seemingly a million miles from anywhere - the perfect place to relax and re-charge.
