Fort Seengh Sagar, Rajasthan, India

This wonderful hunting lodge, overlooking the lake is unique in that it offers the only luxurious taste of exclusive Maharaja-style living in Rajasthan. Your very own palace.

FortSeenghSagar

The hunting lodge of Fort Seengh Sagar is a four suite villa surrounded on three sides by the lake and a unique destination in Rajasthan. Luxuriously appointed, with a central courtyard, roof terrace and wide verandah overlooking the water, this was the summer or pleasure palace of the Umraos and today is the most perfect secret exclusive getaway for a small party.

The excellent staff under the guidance of one’s host, Col. Randhir Singhji, provide sumptuous meals and days are spent in conversation, relaxing, horse riding, fishing or on excursions into the wonderful countryside.

Roughly fifteen minutes’ drive away sits the characterful and charming fortified residence of Deogarh Mahal, restored by the present family and made into a rambling hotel whose rooms and suites capture something of the opulence and magic of former years.

Climbing up through the colourful market town of Deogarh, fascinating and captivating in its bustling activity, rounding a street corner one reaches the gates and battlements of the Mahal. The crenellated walls and building surround a large central courtyard where the owner keeps his collection of vintage Jaguar cars and up above one can see the balconies and royal suites – now forming part of the accommodation – from which the ruling family used to look down on their subjects.

Inside the Mahal is a labyrinth of stairways, small terraces, passageways and balconies which interconnect the rooms and suites, providing individual areas of privacy and seclusion. The rooms are preserved in their original form, with divans and cushions strewn on dais and colourful lights in the windows which bathe the living spaces in a kaleidoscope of tones.

Air-conditioning and electricity have been introduced subject to the restrictions posed by this ancient building and the result is a very comfortable insight into life as a feudal Baron of old. At an altitude of seven hundred metres, Deogarh is cooler than surrounding Rajasthan and looks out to the surrounding Aravalli and the rugged rock-strewn countryside dotted with mirror-like lakes.
