Impressive and imposing, Saxon creates its own atmosphere and ambience within private grounds just a short distance from the business centre of Sandton in Johannesburg yet seemingly a million miles away. Originally designed as a private residence, many personal touches remain and Saxon, although incredibly grand in the modern idiom, retains a homely character.

The six acres of landscaped gardens are set off admirably by extensive water features and numerous terraces. Everywhere great use is made of natural light and shows to great effect the collection of African artefacts and original art which decorates the building. The attention to detail is extraordinary and runs throughout the hotel from the impressive entrance hall to the twenty-four suites, dining room, piano lounge and smoking room.

All of the suites have been designed to satisfy the most discerning of traveller. Large shuttered windows allow natural light to flood into the open plan spaces, large screens and surround sound systems are there to entertain whilst fully equipped workstations are there for the pressing demands of modern life. Fine linen compliments the African themed decoration and the level of service is at that perfect pitch where everything gets done without any fuss, just slightly before one realised one wanted it.

Fabulous cuisine awaits in the dining room where the flavours are rivalled only by the artistry of the chef’s creations. Using only the freshest local - seasonal - produce, the kitchen team are forever experimenting and delighting guests with their skill. One can choose to dine privately in one of the wine cellars or the dining library for an extra special touch of atmosphere to one’s private party.

The wide pool terrace is where one should be for sundowners from which one can gravitate to the Olive Bar and lovely Koi Pond. Guests’ swimming, however should be restricted to the outdoor heated pool, perfect for loosening up after a routine in the gymnasium or, perhaps after having one’s theta mind state explored in the amazing signature sound-therapy spa. Saxon is another experience altogether and whether passing through or exploring the area, we highly recommend dipping in a toe.
