Mahua Kothi, Bandhavgarh, Madhya Pradesh, India

In a joint venture, CC Africa have created this twelve Suite safari lodge with a very Indian flavour - the perfect luxurious base from which to search for the elusive Tiger.

MahuaKothi,Bandhavgarh

Bandhavgarh National Park in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh nestles amid the Vindhya Hills and lush tropical forests - four hundred and fifty square kilometres of beautiful natural habitat and home to a large proportion of India’s tigers.

The name Mahua Kothi comes from one of India’s trees - the Madhuca Indica, or butter tree. Just twelve charming suites or Kutiyas (jungle village huts) are newly built in the forty-acre concession and the original Kothi (homestead) remains and forms the lodge building.

The Kutiyas each have private terraces and shady areas outside for sitting and watching the beautiful birdlife for which Bandhavgarh is famous. Inside, air-conditioned cool luxury awaits in the form of traditionally styled mud and lime walls with floors dressed in stone, wooden shutters and all draped in brightly coloured fabrics. Open rafters, handmade pottery tiles and coloured Situ seating - this is MP Chic (Madhya Pradesh) and it looks rather good.

Bathrooms are en suite with indoor showers and stocked with handmade Jiva Spa toiletries made from Indian herbs and essential oils and in a basket you will find a ‘teach yourself Yoga’ kit.

Every guest has a bicycle, stationed in the courtyards and apart from cycling to the village for a visit, there are guided nature walks, bird watching, picnics and of course tiger safaris twice daily - whether by 4x4 vehicle or on elephant back. Other game in the park include a variety of antelope, wild boar, hyena, porcupine, wild dog and leopard but one needs sharp eyes in this territory and Mahua Kothi’s guides use the monkeys and bird signs to their utmost in order to produce those rare and incredibly rewarding sightings for their guests.

This is the perfect place to drink in India’s wild side - tropical forests, steep rocky hills and grasslands - punctuated with reminders of its immense history - the ruined thousand year old fort - land of the Tiger.
