Kurland, Pletenberg Bay, South Africa, Africa

This family run retreat on the Garden Route sits in idyllic pastures which run down to the white sandy beaches of the Indian Ocean. Families are especially welcome here and there are activities for all - fine dining included.

kurland

The Kurland is a wonderful, family-run country retreat near Pletenberg Bay where the Outeniqua Mountains sweep down to white sandy Indian Ocean beaches. More than a hundred years old, the original farm was built for the Baron and Baroness Behr in the old Cape Dutch style and has since been lovingly transformed into twelve very individual rooms and suites, some with plunge pools.

Kurland interior Kurland relaxing

Children of all ages are welcome at The Kurland and ten of the suites have especially designed children’s lofts. There is lots to do here - tennis, boating, horse and cycle riding the games room and specially constructed swimming pool - and there is also a spa, sauna and steam baths. Nearby there is the Elephant Sanctuary, the Monkeyland Primate Reserve where rangers will guide guests through the forest, pointing out the many species of monkeys, Whale and Dolphin watching on an eco-marine safari and the most perfect stretch of beach is just a short ride away - perfect for strolls and picnics.

The Kurland is beautifully appointed and truly hand-made with the character of an old Cape home rather than hotel. Tastefully decorated rooms hold some pieces of art, antique furniture and paintings, lending an elegance and glamour to the spacious interiors. There is a well-stocked library or just beyond the spacious verandah, the sparkling pool beckons, palm-fringed with comfortable recliners to hand.

Kurland beauty Kurland cottage

One could choose to follow the delicious farm breakfasts with a visit to the gymnasium or more probably a visit to the stables and the magnificent polo ponies, waiting in anticipation of the next match - The Kurland has hosted the England vs South Africa International Test Match for the last two years.

Private pool Cottage bedroom

Warm evenings bring the peace and quiet of barmy Cape life and elegant dining room becomes the scene for fine wines and classic cuisine - the perfect compliment to this gracious retreat.
