Remaining virtually untouched since its discovery by Scottish missionaries at the end of the nineteenth century, Likoma Island is a tiny haven of exclusivity, car-free and sparsely populated by the local fishing community, it is a walker’s paradise. Until recently the only way to reach this hidden corner of Africa was by the 1920s tramp steamer but now an airstrip provides easy access from Lilongwe international airport.

This is the unspoilt, friendly Africa of yesteryear - the island is entirely safe and the people are extremely friendly - if you happen to lose your path, the islanders will go out of their way to show you home. The trail to town winds through traditional fishing villages, across the baobab plains, to the port where the weekly arrival of the ‘Ilala’ is an un-missable opportunity to experience the colourful hustle and bustle of island life and watch the Mozambican dhows arrive to trade - piled high with maize, cassava and firewood - and the chaos which ensues!

Flanked by sandy bays, a rocky promontory forms a natural foundation for the eye-catching stone and teak framed restaurant. It commands spectacular views of the mountains of Mozambique to the east and across the waters towards mainland Malawi to the west where the sun sets in glorious African fashion - sun-downers are served at the bar, beside an open-air deck and infinity rock pool.

Each of the eight cottages has its own hand-crafted, four poster mahogany bed, bathroom with sunken double-tub and hot-water shower. Understated, creating a great sense of calm and designed with individual views in mind, they overlook the lake. All have private terraces and paths which pick and turn their way through sun-bleached rocks to the water.

Diving, skiing, sailing and exploring the lake are all available to those who look for more activity than that offered by the excellent cuisine, private beaches and terraces.
