A love of Africa has always been part of the British traveller’s make-up and there is nothing that enables one to get to grips more with the mysteries of the Dark Continent (whilst enjoying a healthy serving of bygone colonial luxury) than taking a private house for a week or two.
Global Artichoke has probably the finest portfolio of African houses available from ranch houses in Kenya’s northern Laikipia, all the way south to designer beach retreats on the Cape. The style and situation of these houses reflects the country's culture and lends an extra dimension to the holiday which helps one adjust and relax.
Kenyan houses with bomas in the bush, on Lake Naivasha and along the wild pirate-ridden coast from Lamu to Mombasa vary in character and style enormously - the working ranch where more head of cattle are lost to lion than any other in Africa and the lakeside retreat where hippos contravene croquet matches in the middle of the afternoon - all are facets of living in Kenya and most (gloriously) involve plenty of tennis and sundowners on verandahs, wreathed in the magic which this land weaves. Loisaba House, Ol Malo and Il Pinguan are on the edge of the Laikipian Plateau and towards Mount Kenya are Laragai, Kifaru and Lewa House. On Lake Naivasha there is Hippo Point and on the coast, one has the fabulous Alfajiri Villas and Samawati.
Zambia changes in character enormously from its northern boundary at Lake Tanganyika, down the great Luangwa Valley to Lake Kariba and Victoria Falls. Here we find Shiwa Ng'andu the original ‘Africa House’, built by Sir Stewart Gore-Browne in 1920 and the Harveys are welcoming guests there today. The Chongwe River House and Luangwa Safari House are very exciting new developments whilst Tangala on the Zambezi, just above the falls is a fabulous property.
Botswana is famous for its Okovango Delta and for the first time there is a private house available here, right in its very heart. The house belonged to none other then Randall Moore, the creator of Abu’s Camp and is unique in the experience it delivers and the style in which it does so. Randall's House is probably the most exciting private house availble for rent in Africa.
Namibia is a country of amazing landscapes, colours and shadows and the Private Camp is a wonderful property to take for relaxation in an other-worldly environment.
South Africa ranges from the wonderful Waterburg in the north where great horse country surrounds Ant’s Nest and Jembisa Lodge, to the coastal attractions of the Garden Route villas, the Winelands estates and the Cape Town houses.
