Surrounded by grapes nestling in the middle of a vineyard in New Zealands famous Hawkes Bay province, the serenity of The Black Barn allows one time literally to drink in the magnificence of one’s surroundings.

The Black Barn is located right in the heart of one of Hawkes Bay’s famous working vineyards, just out of sight of its nearest neighbour and so, surrounded by grapes, almond trees, olives and citrus, one truly feels enveloped in New Zealand’s rural idyll. Looking out from the slight rise on which it sits, the vista that stretches out across the Hawkes Bay province is beautiful. From the snowcapped mountains in the west to the ocean and river valleys in the east and only five minutes’ from the quaint and historic village of Havelock North, The Black Barn is perfectly placed to explore New Zealand's finest treasures.

Many of New Zealand’s most famous Wine names are (literally) on your doorstep and you are welcome to treat the vineyard as your own while you are staying at The Black Barn and everything from artichokes to fresh figs, almonds and citrus can be gathered from the property for your use, depending on the time of year you are with us.

Of course you can always lend a hand during the vendage, too! Any assistance with the backbreaking work of bringing in the season’s crop will be amply rewarded with a drop or two of the finished article. The winery is just a five-minute walk through the vines and, open all week, there is always someone to advise on the location of the best beaches, golf courses, swimming pools and local attractions. Winery tours can be organised, garden visits, guided fishing trips to some of New Zealand’s best trout streams and one can even order a fully catered meal to be prepared and presented at The Black Barn for your pleasure, should the day have proved particularly trying.

The Wine
We are a small vineyard and our focus is on premium Bordeaux styled red varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Our award winning whites include Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. All our wines are Estate Grown and the fruit hand picked. With just over 20 acres many of our wines are available only through the cellar door.
 
Our elevated north facing site on the lower slopes of the Te Mata Hills is not only an excellent location for grape growing it also provides us with stunning views, a warm sheltered micro-climate and a perfect situation for guests to spend a night or two or even a week or two, tasting our wines, having lunch at the Bistro and enjoying the Saturday morning market and concerts in the amphitheatre.
