Situated on the edge of the Laikipian Plateau with mesmerizing views to Mount Kenya, Ol Malo is a remarkable property rich in character with delightful, friendly hosts. To stay at Ol Malo is a privilege indeed and a very special experience.

Arriving at Ol Malo one cannot fail to be stunned by not only the captivating views across a wild African landscape but also by the quality and style of the property itself. Ol Malo is the fabulous creation of Colin and Rocky Francombe, both born and bred in Kenya and whose excellent management and hosting contributes hugely to one’s stay. Ol Malo clings to the edge of the rugged escarpment looking out across the time-honoured lands of Kenya’s Northern Frontier District and during an early morning swim in the beautiful infinity pool one can enjoy the sun rising behind the foothills of Mount Kenya.

Ol Malo has been built, furnished and decorated not only with superb style and quality but also with individuality and flair. All the roofs are beautifully thatched using papyrus reeds and there is lovely tiling throughout. Each of the bedrooms is different, bathrooms are fun and exciting with stone baths (one even has a crocodile wrapped around it!) and lovely big showers providing plenty of hot water. Crisp bed linen and fluffy towels add to one’s comfort and from every room guests can enjoy the compelling view across Samburu land.

The spacious and welcoming sitting room with colourful rugs and artefacts from Dubai, comfy sofas and drinks cabinet provides the perfect venue for aperetifs by the roaring open fire. Throughout Ol Malo the owners have used local materials - fallen olive wood - and many of the furnishings (beaded lamp shades and decoration) have been designed by Colin and Rocky’s daughter and are made by the Samburu women who also sell their craftwork in the shop.

The pool house is ideal for breakfast or relaxed buffet lunches but time should also be made for bush breakfasts after early morning game drives, dinner and dancing in the boma, beneath the stars or perhaps more formally, in the dining room. At Ol Malo one can do as much or as little as one wishes - there is camel riding, horse riding, visits to the local Samburu manyatta and plenty of opportunity to see a huge variety of game including wild dog, cheetah and Grevy’s Zebra. Alternatively, lying by the pool, listening to the sounds of Africa and gazing at possibly the best view in Kenya with a chilled glass of wine in one’s hand, has a great deal to recommend it!
